CORNWALL DRAMA ASSOCIATION
THEATRE DAY AND THEATRE FESTIVAL AWARDS 2019
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 23RD 2019 at BEST WESTERN HOTEL BRISTOL, NEWQUAY
WORKSHOP
Sat 23rd November 10am (9.30 registration – expected finish time 4pm)
“Around the UK in 4 accents” with Gemma Wright
Gemma Wright returns with another accents workshop for CDA. Her previous workshops were so popular, we have asked her to return and tackle 4 more accents. Regardless of whether you are a director or actor with a specific role in mind, the day will be invaluable in helping with this often tricky area. Gemma will be introducing and teaching the signature sounds to the Celtic accents: Irish (Northern and Southern), Scottish and Welsh. You will learn various ways to ‘get into’ the accent as well as learning the signature sounds. The day will also include some fun voice warm-up techniques which you can take back to your groups. The workshop will allow you to explore the accents using practical methods with a variety of texts. If Gemma’s previous workshops are anything to go by, the day will not only be informative, but great fun too.
It will be important to wear something comfortable and be prepared to ‘have a go’, so the next time you have to act with an accent it may be easier than you think! Handouts will be provided, but please bring a notepad and pencil in case you want to jot things down as we go along.
Gemma Wright is one of only a few professionally recognised vocal trainers working in the performance industry today. She currently teaches accents, practical voice and voice and text across a number of high profile drama schools and universities, which have included the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts, Mountview Theatre School and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
Before embarking on her career as a voice and accent coach, Gemma taught acting and directed many productions both here in the UK and in America, including 5 and 4 star shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
