SPECIAL AWARDS
Our first Special Award goes to an ensemble, and we recognise the enthusiasm and dedication of a children’s ensemble here. The award goes to the children, gymnastic mice and winged fairies of Chacewater’s production of ‘Cinderella’.
Our second Special Award goes to Ruthern Valley Players for magnificent props – a giant pasty that filled half the stage and must have been tricky to make, store, and manoeuvre; and the marvellous banquet accoutrements like the lifelike boar’s head, as well as many other imaginative and brilliantly created props.
Our third Special award of the evening goes to the team at Kidz R Us for extraordinary visual Creativity in ‘Elf Jr’. From the sparkly wastes of Santa’s workshop at the North Pole to the busy urban streets and offices of NYC, from elves dancing on their knees to the Gershwinesque hustle and bustle of the city crowds at morning commute time, the set dressing furniture that cleverly morphed from office to shop to street, the use of colour wash for place and atmosphere, and the stunning back and side projections all these elements gelled together to make an absolute visual treat with really professional slickness in their use and execution. In a way it’s a shame that you are having all that renovation work done – the act of transforming the old chapel into whatever Kidz R Us want it to be has been part of the magic of their productions – I’m sure they won’t lose that magic touch.
The fourth Special award recognises the vast amount of work that goes into producing an original script. This year we have seen a number of pantomimes where sparkling, incisive and witty dialogue, together with hilarious local and topical references, have utterly delighted the audience (and adjudicators). This award goes to the multi-talented Mike Meer for his very clever original script for St Blazey Amateur Operatic Society’s ‘Cinderella’
This fifth Special award recognises the creativity of another of our smaller groups. For the imaginative and clever use of props, set planning and lighting which created a touch of magic and humour in the magic carpet flying scene, Probus Parish Players are awarded this certificate for their production of ‘Aladdin’.
The sixth Special award is an acting award, given to a young person who quite literally stepped into the breach at the last minute, and produced such a fine performance that the adjudicators present at the show had no idea that this was a substitution. So the award for ‘Last minute Matilda’ goes to Bo Gregson in her titular role of Avalon Youth Theatre’s production of ‘Matilda Jr’
Our last Special award is also pantomime related. This comedy duo delighted the audience and adjudicators with their constant subtle costume changes, their deadpan humour, delivered with perfect timing, and their consistently immaculate performance – this over many years of comedy duo’ship, but this year in particular. The Special award goes to Gertie Grabagrot and Ada Arfawipe – aka Oriel Bennett and Georgina Walkey, in St Blazey Amateur Operatic Society’s production of ‘Cinderella’.
